MUSD announces $2.4 million safety expansion, new buses, teacher hiring, and more as the new school year approaches.
As the 2026–27 school year approaches, Marana Unified School District (MUSD) is rolling out several initiatives to enhance safety, transportation, and staffing. The district recently announced a $2.4 million expansion of its School Safety Officer (SSO) program, new charter buses, and a fresh cohort of teachers.
School Safety Program Expansion
Thanks to funding from the Arizona Department of Education, MUSD has been awarded $2.4 million to expand its SSO program. The expansion will increase the presence of off-duty police officers to the majority of schools across the district, covering 10 schools in total. This move aims to bolster campus security and provide a reassuring presence for students and staff.
In addition to the SSO expansion, MUSD reminds families about its SpeakUp Safety Tip Line, available 24/7 at (520) 518-4181. The tip line allows anyone to call or text concerns about student safety and well-being. The district also outlines what families can expect during school emergencies, including safety alerts and real-time updates.
New Teachers and Hiring Opportunities
MUSD is welcoming new teachers for the 2026–27 school year. The district is also actively seeking special education teachers, offering pathways through emergency certification or post-bachelor’s programs for those with a bachelor’s degree. This initiative is part of MUSD’s commitment to providing quality education and addressing teacher shortages in critical areas.
Transportation Upgrades
The district has expanded its transportation fleet with four new charter buses. These buses provide students and student athletes with safe, climate-controlled, and convenient travel for far-away athletic competitions, field trips, and other school-sponsored activities. The upgrade enhances the travel experience and ensures comfort during long journeys.
Recognition and Community Support
Gladden Farms Elementary recently celebrated its National Gold Star School honor, accepted by Principal Naya Persaud at the NAESP Conference in Orlando, FL. The award recognizes excellence in elementary education.
MUSD is also nominated for Best Place to Work in the Arizona Daily Star Readers’ Choice Awards. Community members can vote by August 9.
Family Resources and Important Dates
The district’s Family Resource Center (FRC) continues to provide support, offering food, clothing, and basic necessities through partnerships and grants. Families are encouraged to apply for free or reduced-price meals for 2026–27, as applications are now being accepted. One application covers all children in a household.
Parents should note that the current ParentVUE and StudentVUE apps are being retired on July 21, 2026, and new apps are available for download. Additionally, Estes Elementary’s LEAP and Preschool programs earned a 5-star rating from Quality First, Arizona’s top rating for early childhood programs.
Meet the Teacher events at MUSD elementary and K-8 schools are scheduled for the start of the school year, giving families a chance to visit campuses and meet teachers. For Chromebook insurance, a $30 annual plan is available, with waivers for students receiving free or reduced-price meals.
