TEP's Smart Charge Program Rewards EV Owners for Off-Peak Charging

Tucson Electric Power launches Smart Charge, offering $20 enrollment bonus and $10 monthly credits for EV owners who charge during off-peak hours, with enrollment capped at 500 customers.

Tucson Electric Power (TEP) is launching a new program this summer that rewards electric vehicle owners for charging during off-peak hours, when energy demand is lower and renewable energy is more available. The Smart Charge program offers participants a $20 enrollment bonus and $10 monthly bill credits, while helping to support grid reliability and sustainability.

“With managed charging, EV drivers don’t have to think about timing their charge. We take care of it for them. By charging at the right times, participants can earn rewards while supporting grid reliability and renewable energy,” said Gabriella Abou-Zeid, Senior Program Manager of Beneficial Electrification at TEP.

How Smart Charge Works

Smart Charge uses a contractor, Weave Grid, to create a personalized charging schedule for each participant based on their preferences, pricing plans, and grid conditions. Once enrolled, the customer’s EV charging is automatically managed to that schedule, so they simply plug in as usual. Participants retain control at all times and can opt out of the schedule whenever they choose. To earn the monthly credit, participants must follow the customized schedule at least 85% of the time.

Eligibility and Enrollment

To be eligible, TEP customers must have an approved electric vehicle or charger and be enrolled in specified pricing plans. Availability is capped at 500 customers, so early sign-up is recommended. TEP encourages interested customers to visit their website for full details and enrollment information.

Additional Incentive Programs

Smart Charge is part of TEP’s broader effort to optimize the grid and increase use of renewable resources. Customers can also earn rewards through:

  • Thermostat shifts: Incentives for allowing smart thermostat providers to make small, temporary adjustments during high-demand periods, with the ability to opt out anytime.
  • Energy Storage Rewards: Hundreds of dollars in annual incentives for customers who allow qualifying home battery systems to support the grid during peak demand.

By reducing energy consumption during peak times, TEP can lower the need to purchase or build new generation resources, which helps keep costs down for all customers and improves sustainability.
